In Search of "Joe the Grinder"
"Jody" a.k.a. "Joe the Grinder" is an iconic lady’s man from African-American folklore, whose amorous exploits are the subject of the military marching songs (also called ‘Jodies’). This program charts his legendary journeys and their influence on the creation of the protagonist in Sandra Jackson-Opoku’s second novel—Hot Johnny (and the Women who Loved Him.)
Sandra Jackson-Opoku is an award-winning writer who has published numerous articles, works of fiction and books on Africana literature, travel writing, and African American studies. She has taught Literature and Creative Writing at Chicago State University and the Fiction department of Columbia College.
