Carl Volkmann has been an educator and community volunteer for more than forty years in Springfield. Mr. Volkmann began his professional career as a high school teacher and librarian at Tri-City High School. 10 years later he moved on to the public library sector as a Young Adult Librarian at Lincoln Library, where he was later appointed Director. Mr. Volkmann's retirement as Director of the Library in 1993 marked a whole new dedication to service in Springfield as ?Community Volunteer? (he even had business cards printed up with this title on them!) His ?retirement? has included service on Boards too numerous to list here, but include the Dana-Thomas House Foundation, the Sangamon County Historical Society (where he served as President), and the Lincoln Library Foundation. Mr. Volkmann has also been a member of the Abraham Lincoln Association, the Friends of the Lincoln Library, The Vachel Lindsay Association, and the American Library Association. In addition, he mentors local young students with schoolwork through a program at his church.
