The Honorable Kenneth R. Smith
Marshall

Damian Macey has served the City of Marshall as a volunteer and champion for the humanities for over 60 years. He is being honored for his diligence in preserving historically significant structures in Marshall. He has successfully nominated several buildings in Marshall to be National Register of Historical Places, including the Robert Dulaney House (built in 1864, added to the register on May 2, 1997) and Harlan Hall (completed in 1872, added November 29, 2001). In 2009, he spearheaded the successful effort to have Marshall's historic Archer House Hotel, built in 1841, named to Landmarks Illinois' annual "Ten Most Endangered Historic Places" list. In addition to his preservation efforts, Damian is an active member of the Harlan Hall Committee, which is in charge of restoring the building for community use. He also is active in the committee to restore a local 1845 sweep pole well and assisted in the restoration of the Lincoln School, a one-room 1880 brick country school. Mayor Kenneth R. Smith noted that Damian "has worn many volunteer hats throughout his life and all of them have been to promote the humanities within our community."
