David Edwards, a retired school teacher, is, according to his nominator Petersburg Mayor Diane Kube, ?the epitome of a civic-minded volunteer with a multitude of talents.? For years, Mr. Edwards has volunteered his time to keep the heritage of the Petersburg community alive. He is currently the Treasurer of the Edgar Lee Masters Memorial Board, were in addition to his financial duties, he serves as caretaker for the Masters Home and oversees the maintenance of this historic site. In addition, he leads tours of the Home for local third graders and is ?on call? as a tour guide for any tourists who wish to visit the Masters Home when it is not normally open. In addition to his performances as an actor and singer in local productions at Springfield Muni Opera, Springfield Theater Center, and Theater in the Park at New Salem, Mr. Edwards also portrays several characters from Master's Spoon River Anthology for local community groups and portrays local historical figures a the annual Petersburg cemetery tours. Mr. Edwards is also a member of the Menard County Historical Society, where is a volunteer tour guide at its local museum. His current project is to obtain copies of all the books that Edgar Lee Masters wrote, to complete the collection at the Masters home, which is missing 6 volumes.
