Dorothy Hawn is honored for her efforts to help others improve their quality of life through reading in Salem. As a volunteer tutor in the Kaskaskia College Reading Link adult literacy program, Ms. Hawn remains dedicated to the idea that the opportunity to learn to read should be available to everyone. At the age of 81, she continues to tutor in the program, and now also trains other tutors as well. Her work earned her both Reading Link Volunteer of the Year Award and the Spotlight on Service Award. We recognize her as a true "humanities hero" with the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award.
Select Illinois Humanities Council programs are now available for listening or download at Chicago Public Media (WBEZ) as a part of Chicago Amplified, a web-based audio library of diverse public events recorded throughout the Chicago region.
