Eileen Boevers founded the Apple Tree Theatre 23 years ago with the mission of producing a diverse and challenging set of dramas and musicals that illuminate the human condition, celebrate the tenacity of the human spirit, and expand the vision of artists and audiences alike. Today she serves as both the Theatre's Executive Director and its Artistic Director. According to Mayor Michael Belsky of Highland Park, the Theatre's home, "Thousands of patrons would testify that the Theatre's mission has been accomplished through many productions that have expanded their horizons and changed their lives." Ms. Boevers recently began the Theatre for Young People (TYA) at Apple Tree Theatre to bring works of literature to life on stage. TYA works with schools to meet state-mandated literacy and literature requirements and encourages students through shows and discussions to consider challenging social and historical issues from racism to the Holocaust. Ms. Boevers also founded the Eileen Boevers Performing Arts Workshop, which since 1970 has helped generations of young people to gain artistic skills, self-esteem, and self-discipline. Ms. Boevers has made it a policy of the Theatre to offer free and discounted tickets to deserving students in the Workshop, reflecting her general commitment to sharing the theatrical experience and the classics with as many as possible.
