For nearly 20 years, Betsy Armistead has fostered and nurtured cultural awareness in the Village of Schaumburg as Director of the Prairie Center for the Arts and now as Director of Cultural Services. Through her efforts, Schaumburg hosts the Prairie Arts Festival, a holiday season Christkindlesmarkt featuring ethnic foods and crafts, and live entertainment (from storytelling to big band music) in the Town Square's outdoor amphitheater. We recognize Ms. Armistead for these efforts, but especially for her initiation of the celebration of Black History Month in Schaumburg and for her most recent venture, a book project on the history of the Village. According to her nominator, Mayor Al Larson, ?Ms. Armistead is rescuing Schaumburg's past from obscurity, while providing a vehicle for preserving our heritage.?
