For more than twenty-five years, Gail Rice has been and integral part of the development and implementation of adult literacy programs for the City of Palos Heights. When she moved to Palos Heights after graduate school, Ms. Rice volunteered as a literacy tutor, even coordinating tutoring programs through Trinity Christian College, where her husband is a professor. She has written, co-authored, and edited literacy texts and teaching manuals, and has served as speaker and advisor for organizations focused on victim-offender reconciliation and juvenile justice intervention programs. Over the years Ms. Rice has not only been a tutor, but has organized and encouraged tutor groups, such as that from Trinity Christian College, which serves at Cook County Jail in the PACE (Programmed Activities for Correctional Education) program. She has served on the board of managers for the past 5 years. For more than two decades she has been involved with the ATA (Adults Tutoring Adults) program based out of South Suburban Community College in South Holland. Since 1999 she has frequently been a presenter at local, state, and national-level workshops concerned with developing adult literacy programs to serve churches, community colleges, prisons, and jails.
