Heather Shore, an arts teacher at the City of Rock Falls? community high school, has demonstrated time and again a commitment to the history of Rock Falls through artistic efforts involving local students. What's more, Ms. Shore has done this without being asked, commissioned, or compensated for her and her students? efforts. Together with her students, she has created two murals that adorn the walls of Rock Falls? Municipal Complex. One of them reflects a compilation of local events dating back to the turn of the twentieth century. Another mural is located in the fire department and honors the history of Rock Falls? volunteer and full-time firefighters. In addition, Ms. Shore and her students created tiles to commemorate key events in local history, helped outside individuals design their own tiles, and fired and coated the tiles, which are now permanently affixed to a wall in the conference area at the Mayor's office in City Hall. She has been a role model for her students, demonstrating for them the power of the arts to celebrate the history and heritage of a community.
