Jonathan Elfner is a teacher of American History at Homewood-Flossmoor High School whose "commitment to the humanities goes well beyond the classroom," according to Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld. He has master's degrees in both education and history and was nominated for a 2007 Golden Apple Award for his excellence in teaching. Elfner brings history to life for his students by introducing them to music of different eras and holding discussions based on artwork from different historical periods. He also often plays historical songs on his guitar, a teaching activity that was featured in the Southtown Star. In addition to his teaching, Jon co-produced a ninety minute oral history documentary film for the 50th anniversary of Infant Jesus of Prague Parish in Flossmoor. He is also on the Homewood-Flossmoor High School 50th Anniversary Committee. An accomplished musician, he organizes musical performances for the school and community with his band, "Staff Infection and the South Side Horns," made up of Homewood-Flossmoor High School faculty, students, and alumni.
