Mona Tourlentes, a long-time resident of the City of Galesburg, has been a leader in several efforts that have contributed to the cultural life of the area. She is also a leader in music education and appreciation. Twenty-five years ago Ms. Tourlentes established the Rootabaga Jazz Festival, an event she herself organized for 10 years in conjunction with Knox College. To this day the Festival is going strong, promoting a competition and learning session for many high school bands. Every year The Festival attracts a number of famous jazz musicians. past performers have included Orbert Davis, Mose Allison, and Kurt Elling. Ms. Tourlentes was also instrumental in creating the Studios Midwest Summer Program. This residency program allows artists from the U.S. and other countries to spend a summer in Galesburg pursuing their art. Now in its nineteenth year, the program has been a huge success. Ms. Tourlentes was director for 10 years and remains an active member of the Studios Midwest Board.
