A member of one of the oldest families in Makanda, Ruby Nance Mayer is honored for her continuing commitment to preserving the history of her community and educating the young people there. Ms. Mayer is a published poet and also a Sunday School teacher who has donated books and her services to the local library. She was also instrumental in making the monument to Makanda''s veterans a reality. Through her research, the community was able to identify all the names for the monument, some of which dated back to the War of 1812.
