Michael Montenegro's puppets run an astounding gamut, from tiny Punch and Judy figures to a headless, life-size doppelganger of the puppeteer. Most beautiful is a delicate moving sculpture of bones in the 2004 Sublime Beauty of Hands, which tells an oblique, poetic story about evil munitions makers, the vulnerability of the body, and the limitations of puppetry. Matters turn much less serious in the delightful Klown Kantos: six very funny puppet bits, loosely connected by the ensemble's clowning. Montenegro's interactions with his creations--comic revelations of the tender, antagonistic, complicated relationship between puppet and puppeteer--are a highlight. Display running Friday & Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm from October 16, 2009 - November 1, 2009. Start: 8:00 pm

A Road Scholar Program by Ellie Carlson Anita Willets Burnham was an artist, author and visionary who boldly took her family of 5 around the world, twice, in the 1920s. They went third class, she said, "only because there wasn't a fourth." After years of encouragement from friends and her art students, she wrote a book about their adventures and launched herself into the lecture circuit to promote it. Mrs. Burnham was fortunate, later in life to discover a man who invented a time machine. In exchange for her painting portraits of his family, he sends her forward in time to your event. Mrs. Burnham very much enjoys the 21st century and always regrets that she must come without her paint box. Elizabeth "Ellie" Carlson is the Curator of Costumes for the Winnetka Historical Society, has a background in the theatre, and is a student of nineteenth century Domestic Arts. She holds a Masters of Historical Administration and Museum Studies from the University of Kansas, and has worked in local museums for 25 years. Ellie believes that properly costumed living history is the closest we can come to a time machine experience. Theatre and history combine to show what the past might really have looked, felt, smelled, and sounded like in Ellie's presentations. Start: 1:00 pm

Bonesbare 3 is the third installment in the annual artistic collaborative event hosted by Chicago modern dance collective, CORE PROJECT. This year, CORE PROJECT tackles humor with new movements from choreographers Megan Beseth, Melanie Palmer, and Jessica Melville Goodin + videos by Matt Pierce and Susan Kwon + new work by guest artists Mary Tisa and Candace Winters-March. Throughout history, humor has been used as a form of entertainment all over the world, whether in the courts of the Western kings or the villages of the Far East. Today, many theories exist about what humor is and what social function it serves. As with any form of art, acceptance of humor depends on social demographics and varies from person to person. And as with any artist, the motivation and purpose to evoke laughter may also vary between humorists. This October, CORE PROJECT invites you to explore what makes us laugh. What makes YOU laugh? And perhaps more importantly, why do we make others laugh? | ||

Start: 7:30 pm

With "Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition," an exhibition created by the Library of Congress, will open at the Newberry Library on October 10, 2009, in commemoration of the 200th birthday of America's 16th president. The exhibition offers the public the opportunity to view rarely seen treasures from the Library of Congress's collections. "With Malice Toward None" charts Lincoln's growth from prairie lawyer to preeminent statesman and addresses the monumental issues he faced, including slavery and race, the dissolution of the Union, and the Civil War. The exhibit reveals Lincoln the man, whose thoughts, words, and actions were deeply affected by personal experiences and pivotal historic events. By placing Lincoln's words in a historical context, the exhibition gives visitors a deeper understanding of how remarkable Lincoln's decisions were for their time and why his words continue to resonate today.
