Calm, harmony, serenity, and freedom from strife: these are the tenets of peace. Historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King dedicated their lives to advocating that these rights be afforded to all. Each year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the Nobel Peace Prize to an individual who has “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

Part of the Folksongs for Seniors Series, a four-part lecture-concert series on American folk music targeted to senior citizens in the area. Bucky Halker has released Welcome to Labor Land, a 2002 CD featuring interpretations of Illinois Labor and working-class protest songs from 1865-1955. Chris Walz is a guitar instructor who previously worked for the Old Town School of Folk Music and has recorded and performed throughout Illinois.

The Time of Your Life Players present "The Dreamers," a new, original one-act musical comedy about a band of aging rockers hoping for a record contract and tour.

The cast of "The Dreamers" will be available for a post-show discussion after each performance, to be led by Martha A. Jacob, Specialization Coordinator, Gerontology, Department of Sociology and Criminology at Dominican University and by Karen N. Kolb, MS, RFG, Manager, Community Engagement, Mather LifeWays.

Where and When: The Apollo Theater Studio at 2540 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, beginning October 7th and running every Wednesday and Friday at 2:00 PM through October 30th

About "The Dreamers"
"The Dreamers" is set in Judy's garage where her band of old rockers practice. They are anxiously awaiting word of a possible record contract and tour. When Judy's long lost younger sister arrives the band is thrown into chaos, and threatened with dissolution. Can Guardian Angels sent by Elvis himself save the band?

Art Under Glass showcases the work of local artists, and brings life and energy to unoccupied retail spaces. Media will be diverse including photography, sculpture, glass and canvas works. The New artists Opening Night will begin in the main lobby area of 708 Church Street. This event will be followed by a Church/Orrington artists walk and is free and open to the public. Artwork will be on display in area storefronts through Dec.

Discussion of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time, by Greg Mortenson ad David Oliver Relin

Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare is a discussion-based program that brings hospital staff together monthly to reflect on the larger mission of medicine through facilitated conversations about literature.

Four mystery authors -- Robert Goldsborough, Luisa Buehler, Michael Black and Mary Welk discuss Edgar Allan Poe's influence on their work.

Timothy Burns, an accomplished video artist, photographer and printmaker will work with digital images to produce acrylic painntings on aluminum, calling his process "convergent media. He'll explain how to use transfers and scan, source, draw, paint and ink to create a work of art through use of technology.

Nearly 50 years after a vaccine was developed, Polio still attacks in the poorest corners of the planet. Reeltime presents two short documentaries about the impact of Polio: the Academy Award-nominated The Final Inch takes us to India where a quiet army of outreach workers goes door-to-door to reach unvaccinated children. Discussion led by Kris Tsau, Polio Advocacy Specialist, Rotary International. Co-presented with Rotary International.
