Why is the language of the ancient Romans still important today? In this illustrated lecture (overhead or power point) the role of Latin in American education will be traced from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first century. Rather than being a dead or dying language, Latin continued to be an important cultural sign in modern America. Special emphasis will be given to the contribution Latin has made to the English vocabulary. In this interactive presentation, the audience will be expected to participate by completing worksheets, sharing their responses, and other activities.

Thomas Sienkewicz holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and is currently the Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics at Monmouth College. Sienkewicz has given numerous scholarly and public lectures.
