Location(s)
The QSOA will collaborate with the Quincy Community Theatre, the Quincy Museum, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's "Beyond the Score" staff, and academic experts to explore Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World." Activities will consider the work within its historical context, focusing on the attempt by the 19th Century Czech composer steeped in European national, cultural, and artistic ideas to create and harness an American musical identity based on American literary and ethnic influences. Utilizing the Beyond the Score format, the QSOA will present a series of programs for non-traditional audiences in a retelling of Dvorak's 1890s visit to America while exploring the roots of Native American, African American, and other cultures within his work.
