A book group program for 25 male students aged 16 to 21at the Second Chance Alternative High School in the Back of the Yards area of Chicago. The intention of the program is to remove barriers and resistance to participation in reading, writing, and self expression and to explore the dominant themes of violence and gangs in their lives. Participants in the group will meet once a week from September 2005 to May 2006. The program will end with two public performances, exhibits and a panel involving the founder of the school, an art historian from Chicago State University, the poet and activist Luis Rodriguez, and the participating students.Grant Date:
