Public programming related to the exhibition "Aztecs and the Making of Colonial Mexico" that will be at the library from September 2006 to January 2007. This exhibition will focus on the adaptation of Aztec culture in the period after the Spanish conquest, and its impact on the heritage and culture of Mexico, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. Public programming for this exhibition includes a concert series on colonial Mexican music, a symposium on recent scholarship related to the Aztecs, screenings of a video by a Nahua filmmaker, a lecture and a workshop on sources for Mexican and Mexican American genealogy, illustrated talks about indigenous mapmaking and about contemporary hand painted books, and gallery walks, among other events. These events will be held at the Newberry Library, the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, UIC, and at community centers serving Mexicans and Mexican Americans around the city.
