The Chicago Metro History Education Center offers the opportunity for 17,000 students in grades six through twelve to create extended community history research projects. Students are encouraged to go beyond their school libraries and encyclopedias into local libraries and historical societies. Papers are presented at local, regional, and state competitions and the best papers are awarded. In addition, the CMHEC offers professional development and curricular materials for teachers in the use of primary sources in the classroom and in developing a humanities consciousness. The IHC will support the CMHEC with funds that will help develop the organization's governance and infrastructure.
