Chicago Dramatists offers playwrights an opportunity to discuss and present new works through various methods. The organization will present the work of Lydia Diamond entitled "Hottentot Venus". This play tell the story of a fictional anthropologist and her writing on the Hottentot Venus, an African woman who spent much her life on display in a kind of pseudo-scientific sideshow run by various respected European scientists. The play raises important issues about imperialism, race, gender, oppression, and intellectuals. The playwright will visit Chicago and will discuss the work with the audience.Grant Date:
