SAFE House is a non-profit, residential treatment program for men seeking to end their dependence upon drugs or alcohol. In this project, faculty from the University of Illinois English Department will augment the spiritual mission of this church-based program by offering SAFE House residents another way to overcome their dependence upon addiction. By presenting a semester-long reading and discussion seminar, residents encounter another kind of "high" - one that comes from the aesthetic experience. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on carefully chose literature that allow them to explore another place and time, of intuiting a revelation about the human heart, or of perceiving an insight into the human mind.
