A traveling exhibit will be developed to tell the story of Hispanic, African American, and Southern Highlander workers recruited to work a Sterling, Illinois steel and wire factory from 1945-53. The workers were housed in railroad cars that had been painted silver to reflect the heat. Many have stayed in the area and become established middle-class residents and their stories will form a key part of the exhibit.
