A series of panels, lectures, literary readings, and publications that will complement the exhibition "Black Is, Black Ain't" at the Renaissance Society. According to the proposal "race as the basis for social identity and group affiliation has become increasingly suspect, with race being acknowledged as a purely social construct built from a biological fiction." The exhibition will explore this shift in the rhetoric of race through a survey of work by 25 black and non black artists. The educational programming for this project includes two panels, two lectures, three readings by African American writers, and a brochure with a 2,000 word essay by the curator of the show.Grant Date:
