The Story Workshop Institute proposes to offer a writing/reading/speaking workshop utilizing diverse literary art and "mixed diction" approaches to low-income African-American students at the Naperville Family Resource Center. Three Story Workshop directors will work with 30 students age six to 15, meeting once a week over a five week period. The focus of the workshop is diversity in literary arts, communication and leadership. The Story Workshop approach encourages students to bring their backgrounds and language into the classroom, developing a "mixed diction" approach to their writing. The Story Workshop approach involves, oral telling, oral reading, word games, and writing projects, and will culminate in a public presentation by students for family, friends and community members.
