A series of after school workshops for 20 youth participants that will examine leadership, social policy and civic responsibility as embodied by the late Mayor Harold Washington and the Chicago Freedom Movement; and research the origins and history of House Music in Chicago. The intention of the project is to allow youth to examine the contrast of social abandon and social responsibility, and allow them to consider ways to combine their desire for self-satisfaction and a genuine sense of social contribution. In addition to reading about these subjects the students will work with facilitators and visiting scholars, and collect source material that will be developed for six public performances. Participants will meet three times each week from late September of 2006 to February 2007, while the public performances will take place in March of 2007.Grant Date:
