Miriam R. Zayed

has retired as a teacher with the Chicago Public Schools after 34 years of service. Zayed graduated from Chicago State University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. After teaching full-time while raising her four children, she went back to school and received her Masters of Education from National Louis University in 1996. She has also completed over 45 hours of post-master's lane promotional credit. Zayed has been active in the Arab American community since the age 16. She is an Executive Board member of the Arab American Democratic Club. She also serves as vice-president of the Club of Beitunia, Palestine of Greater Chicago and as secretary of the American Arabian Ladies Society. In 1993 she completed the Law Program for Community Developers and Social Workers at the John Marshall Law School. Former Governor George Ryan nominated her as a member his Transition Team for Education and as a member of the Governor's Commission on Revising the School Code (GCRSC). Governor Ryan established Executive Order Seven to develop this commission to review and rewrite the Illinois School Code to correct deficiencies, improve the organizational structure, and provide changes to improve its readability and ease of use. She has also been a candidate for school board member of High School District 230. In 2004 she was an alternate delegate to the Democratic Convention in Boston. She has been involved in many projects promoting cultural diversity and understanding. Zayed has been married to Refat Zayed since 1971 and has four children and five grandchildren. Her daughter Khawla is a teacher in School District 135 in Orland Park; son Belal and daughter Zahia-Lena are Doctors of Pharmacy; and son Hythem, is a physician at Northwestern Hospital in Evanston. She and her family are residents of Orland Park.
