Arthur M. Sussman

is Vice President of the MacArthur Foundation. He served the University of Chicago for 21 years as chief legal officer. Sussman developed and administered University policies regarding labor, personnel and benefits, and he oversaw all operations of Argonne National Laboratory and its 4,000 employees. He managed the University's government relations program and advised presidents on numerous issues involving University governance, organization, and research and technology transfer. He has overseen the operations of the Laboratory Schools and the University's Dean of Students Office and guided initiatives to improve the quality of student life. He also served the community in a number of ways. He was a lecturer in the Law School and the Graduate School of Business, and he and his wife, Rita, served for five years as Resident Masters in Woodward Court. Sussman also served on boards for the Chapin Hall Center for Children, the University charter school, and the ARCH Development Corporation. Sussman joined the University in 1979 after two years as university legal counsel at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. From 1970 to 1977, he practiced law in Chicago as a member of the firm of Jenner & Block; as an associate attorney until 1975, and then as a partner. Sussman received his B.S. from Cornell University in 1963 and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1966. He has been admitted to the bar in New York and Illinois. He is the author of a number of articles on law.
