Gary Koch
is Director of Communications and Education for the Illinois Municipal League. He previously served as executive assistant to the Illinois Attorney General and as special assistant to the State Comptroller. He also served as executive director of the Legislative Local Accounting Task Force and was a reporter for the Springfield State Journal-Register. For the past 21 years, Koch has served as adjunction professor at Millikin University, the University of Illinois at Springfield, Springfield College, and he currently teaches political science and film at Lincoln Land Community College. He is a graduate of Illinois College and has MA degrees from the University of Illinois at Springfield in public affairs reporting and communications.Koch is accredited in public relations by the Public Relations Society of America and was chair of that organization's public affairs and government sections. He is past president of the University of Illinois at Springfield Alumni Board and the Springfield Society of Illinois College. He serves on the executive board of the Springfield Salvation Army and the Country Club Home Owners Association. He is a member of the Springfield and Central Illinois Film Commission.
Koch is author of Township Officials of Illinois: A Centennial Celebration to be published in November 2007, co-edited Illinois Local Government: A Handbook (SIU Press, 1990) and is a co-author of Practical Public Affairs in an Era of Change (University Press of America/Public Relations Society of America 1996), and has published numerous articles on government relations and local government. In 2002 he received The Communicator Award of Distinction and the Master Communicator Award of Merit. In 2005 he served as a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, conducting research at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
Koch lives in Springfield with his wife Valerie and daughters Laura and Kimberly.
