09/17/2003
H-Illinois provides a free cross-disciplinary internet resource for scholars of Illinois history and culture CHICAGO - In partnership with Michigan State University’s H-Net project, the Illinois Humanities Council (IHC), has launched a free online list serve for people with an interest in Illinois history and culture. H-Illinois will provide a forum for discussion on such topics as Illinois history, the history and culture of the Midwest, and the roles played by the state and the region in national and transnational experiences. Tim Draper, professor of history at Waubansee Community College, serves as the editor and moderator of the list-serve.
Launched in August, H-Illinois is an online community for teachers and scholars interested in any and all humanities disciplines, as they relate to Illinois. Disciplines include: history, women’s studies, African American studies, political science, anthropology, American studies, literature, and folklore, among others. H-Illinois allows subscribers to share information, ask questions, and contribute to a moderated dialogue on issues and topics related to the above topics, particularly in relation to Illinois. The list-serve will make it easier for teachers, libriarians, scholars, graduate students, journalists, museum staff, and the interested general public to communicate with each other and locate people with similar research or teaching interests.
Based on the campus of Michigan State University, H-Net is an international consortium of scholars and teachers that create and manage a collection of humanities and social science base list-serves. By employing new communications technologies, H-Net promotes teaching and scholarship in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Currently H-Net sponsors over 100 list-serves with residents of over 90 countries participating.
Joining the H-Illinois community is easy: just visit the H-Illinois website and click on "Subscribe." After your request is confirmed you will begin receiving all H-Illinois postings. The subscription process takes a few minutes and participation is free. To access the H-Illinois site, just type "H-Illinois" or www.h-net.msu.edu/~illinois/ into your search engine (for example, "Google" or "Yahoo").
