Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare®

Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care®, originally developed by the Maine Humanities Council, brings the power of the humanities to the workplace, in this case the modern hospital, engaging health care professionals with humanistic perspectives and insights that help them do their work better. Doctors, nurses, hospital trustees, and support staff meet monthly for facilitated discussions about literature that illuminates issues central to caring for people. These seminars take place on-site at the hospitals in the evening and are led by a professional facilitator chosen by the IHC.

The IHC currently runs Literature & Medicine seminars at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, and the Midwest Palliative & Hospice Care Center in Glenview. Through a grant from Prince Charitable Trusts, the program expanded to three Chicago Hospitals -- John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and Rush Medical Center --in the fall of 2007.
