The New Deal and Labor Protest Songs, 1930-1945

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Americans searched for ways to deal with the massive social malaise. At the ballot box in 1932, they voted overwhelmingly for the Frank D. Roosevelt and his promise of a “New Deal.” Millions of workers also took to the streets and joined labor unions, revitalizing the American Federation of Labor and fueling the rise of the new Congress of Industrial Organizations. As workers and their allies fought for justice, they fueled an outpouring of protest songs that served to educate and inspire audiences. In a program that combines performance and commentary, Bucky Halker reviews the songs of the New Deal era including the songs of Leadbelly, Florence Reece, Woody Guthrie, the CIO, and Pete Seeger.
