Val Maas and Connie Stauffer

Fourth grade teachers Val Maas and Connie Stauffer bring the world of yesterday to the world of today for their community of Oregon. For a number of years they have taken their students to the Senior Center once a month and paired each with a senior in their "Chums" program. The pairs spend the afternoon investigating themes—from changes in hairstyles through the ages to the history of the postal service—through skits, crafts, and other activities. Mrs. Maas and Mrs. Stauffer have also made it possible for their students and the other residents of Oregon to have the experience of learning in a late-19-century two-room schoolhouse. The two were catalysts in the movement of the Chana School from its original setting to its current riverside location in Oregon and worked with a dedicated volunteer committee to renovate the school to its former glory; it is now used as a museum by the Oregon community.
