Stella LiPomi
Since 1990, Stella LiPomi has been on a mission to improve access to the humanities for special needs residents of her own village of Lincolnwood as well as the surrounding communities of Skokie, Morton Grove, Niles, Golf, and Des Plaines. She currently runs the Liponi Foundation for Special Recreation, which was established by her uncle Sam Liponi to formalize his support for M-NASR (Maine Niles Association of Special Recreation), an organization providing therapeutic physical and social recreational programs for special needs persons. During the past year alone, Ms. LiPomi's efforts have allowed residents to participate in humanities-related programs from museum exhibits such as the Field Museum's King Tut exhibit to theater and dance productions such as the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. In addition, her efforts have led the way to M-NASR's development of eight-week programs, including "It's Show Time" (theater-related instruction) and "Musically Speaking" (music instruction).Return to the archive listing for The Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award - 2006
