The Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award - 2006

Sheldon Frank

Nominated By The Honorable Carl R. Bates

Mount Carroll

Sheldon Frank

Sheldon Frank has served on the Board of the Timber Lake Playhouse since 1961, a year before the Playhouse curtain rose for the first time. Originally asked to join the board because of his music major in college, his interest in the arts, and his commitment to the Mt. Carroll business community, Mr. Frank has held the positions of Treasurer, Vice President, and—for the last 21 years—Board President. He has been a mainstay of the Playhouse, and his determination and leadership have guided it from its infancy to what it is today: a center for cultural opportunity, a home for developing artists, and a showcase for quality theater in the Midwest. To date, more than 300 plays and musicals have been presented at the Playhouse with the number of performances exceeding 3,250. Mr. Frank is also a past member of the board of the Illinois Arts Council's Theatre Division, the Shimer College Board of Directors, and the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Board at the University of Illinois. He was also the organist and choir director at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll for 25 years.
