Lewistown

Charles O. Parkinson

Charles O. Parkinson, a lifetime resident of Lewistown, has volunteered his time and his intellect over the past 50 years to capturing the essence of life in his community's past and presenting it with a flourish to current and future generations. Mr. Parkinson began to preserve artifacts of local history at age 15 and quickly gained a reputation for his relentless research and documentation. Once the author of a local news feature, "Charlie's Corner," he now brings his expertise to others online and by distributing historical information on computer CDs. His articles encourage the citizens of Lewistown to take a close look at their own history, covering historical topics from Lincoln's debate with locals on "Which is mightier, the pen or the sword?" at the old Methodist Church, to how Spoon River got its name. As Mayor R. John King puts it, "our small town's personality shines through Charlie's words."
