Lana Haines

Lana Haines is awarded the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award for founding Kingston's public library, the Kingston Community Sharing Library. As an avid reader who taught reading to 3 graders for 30 years and volunteered in adult literacy programs, Ms. Haines was troubled by the fact that Kingston's residents had no library. When she retired in 2002, she began working through the Hand in Hand Community Project to rectify the problem. The books donated for the library were initially housed in the Village Board meeting room and had to be moved every two weeks so the Board could meet. After a year of this chore and with a growing inventory of books and new members, Ms. Haines and her husband purchased a local historic building and donated space for the library to have a permanent home. The library is now open three days a week, has over 300 members, and is staffed by a dedicated group of community volunteers. Ms. Haines coordinates the library's operations and runs a weekly reading hour for children during the summer. According to Village President John Munro, the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award is the perfect way to recognize her "four decades of dedication and accomplishments."
