Cyber-bullying and Digital Citizenship

Cafe Society will be meeting at Ron's Barber Shop on Friday, October 14

BeyondMedia Education will present their ground-breaking anti-cyber-bullying docudrama, Your Social Life. The 20-minute short film will be followed by a discussion about digital citizenship and how young people can make their social networks safer and protect themselves from online harassment.

From "Are youth of color affected by cyberbullying?" by Lynda Lopez, Youth Leadership Council of Beyondmedia Education

"The advent of the Internet has brought tremendous benefits, such as establishing connections among people that otherwise would not have been able to connect. However, to quote Peter Parker, with great power comes great responsibility. It is sometimes unclear what being responsible means on the Internet...Youth learn what is acceptable and safe face-to-face behavior, but as our society is relying more and more on digital technology as our main form of communication, it is imperative we start adapting and teaching these skills for online interactions and to educate youth about the emotional, social, and legal repercussions of digital behavior."

Questions for Consideration

How can schools and parents work together to prevent cyberbullying?  How do cell phones and electronic communication make bullying easier? Or if technology's not to blame, why do kids take part in cyberbullying? What are the pros and cons of anti-bullying laws? How can we help kids who bully as well as kids who are getting bullied?
