Velosophie participants on the roadVelosophie is a reading-discussion program that combines physical, outdoor excursions in natural settings with evening reading and reflection.
Through careful reading and moderated discussions, participants blend their individual experiences on tour with open, meaningful conversations with one another about the larger questions that underlie their commitment to the activity. Through movement, the program serves people interested in thinking and talking about what it means: to be fully alive in the world; to be fully human in their environment; and, to stand in relation to, and in balance with, the mind, the body, the land, and those around us.
2010 Velosophie discussionThree kinds of experiences form the basis of these conversations:
- short, dense readings in literature, poetry, memoir, and philosophy;
- the shared physical activity;
- and, immersion in the landscapes through which participants move.
Velosophie is currently offered through partnership between the IHC and the League of Illinois Bicyclists and accompanies the Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Ride.

The IHC is currently exploring other partnerships for Velosophie programs, including partnerships with Chicago-area agencies and further afield. For more information on how Velosophie programs might be brought to your tour group or association, please contact us.
